Aunque el racismo no es un nuevo desarrollo en los Estados Unidos, la muerte de George Floyd empujó a muchos estadounidenses de color y caucásicos al punto de quiebre. El racismo sistémico flagrante ha dejado a muchas personas en los Estados Unidos y a nivel mundial anhelando un cambio, y dispuesto a luchar para hacerlo realidad. Sin embargo, su muerte no sólo ha afectado a los estadounidenses, sino que ha tenido un profundo efecto en más de 60 países que se han tomado un momento para examinar sus prejuicios y sesgos para ver qué cambios debe hacerse. Manifestantes de Australia a Europa identificados con la causa de las protestas estadounidenses instaron a sus gobiernos a abordar el racismo y la violencia policial. Este acontecimiento -tan terrible cómo es- ha causado un movimiento global que dará forma a las vidas de las generaciones venideras.
Este momento de la historia también ha hecho que los ciudadanos a nivel transnacional examinen los defectos de sus gobiernos. Ha brillado una luz sobre las reacciones de los líderes de todo el mundo que están tratando de manejar está situación a lo largo de generaciones de racismo. Aunque la muerte de Floyd ha tenido un impacto más significativo en la comunidad afroamericana, la gente está aprovechando esta oportunidad para protestar por el trato de otras minorías como los latinos y los nativos americanos por las fuerzas del orden y el sistema de justicia en su conjunto. A medida que las protestas por el racismo policial y la desigualdad racial se han extendido a los 50 estados de Estados Unidos y 2.000 ciudades desde la muerte de George Floyd, el mundo ha estado observando.
Manifestantes han marchado por las calles o se han reunido en las embajadas de Estados Unidos en Canadá, el Reino Unido, Alemania, Australia y más, tanto para expresar su solidaridad con los manifestantes estadounidenses como para resaltar las desigualdades sistémicas en el país. Según la revista Times, "los medios de comunicación del mundo también están prestando atención. Las portadas y editoriales de Francia a México a China han discutido la muerte de Floyd, la violenta represión de los manifestantes por parte de las fuerzas del orden y la respuesta divina a las protestas montadas por el presidente Donald Trump". Donald Trump no ha hecho nada más que seguir enemistando la situación llamando a los manifestantes "delincuentes", usando a los militares contra los manifestantes y defendiendo a los oficiales responsables de estas muertes llamándolos "gente buena". Estos oficiales que cometieron delitos graves no sólo permanecen libres, sino que siguen actuando como fuerzas del orden, y sólo un puñado fueron castigados. Esta falta de justicia se debe en parte a que los funcionarios de la ciudad, el condado y el estado sienten un sentido de responsabilidad a los oficiales de policía y no están dispuestos a procesarlos, lo que ha sido un hilo conductor en muchos casos de brutalidad policial en todo el mundo. Este comportamiento tiene que cambiar, las personas responsables de la muerte de estadounidenses (como Breonna Taylor) merecen ser castigados, y como se ha demostrado, los estadounidenses están dispuestos a exigir ese castigo.
Ahora, sé que ninguno de nosotros tiene suficiente influencia en el gobierno o en las opiniones de todos los estadounidenses para poner fin al racismo. Sin embargo, todavía hay cosas que todo el mundo puede hacer. El más crítico es preguntarse a uno mismo y a los demás, "¿cómo estoy contribuyendo a este problema?". Porque les guste o no, todo el mundo ha dicho, hecho o permanecido en silencio mientras algo racista ha ocurrido. Además, educarse sobre estos asuntos esenciales también es crucial (a continuación, dejaré algunas recomendaciones de libros). Aunque empezar por uno mismo es muy importante, hay pasos aún más significativos que uno puede tomar que son fáciles y esenciales, siendo uno el voto. Todos los estadounidenses tienen la responsabilidad de votar, y si más estadounidenses votan por funcionarios locales que están dispuestos a procesar a oficiales racistas, más oficiales responsables de la muerte de los estadounidenses cotidianos serán justamente castigados.
Este movimiento ha ido mucho más allá de "Black Lives Matter" esto se ha convertido en un movimiento sobre los derechos humanos fundamentales. Derechos que todas las personas nunca deben sentir como si estuvieran en peligro de perder debido al color de su piel. Dado que es de esperar que el mundo siga haciendo cambios en las políticas y restablezca a los agentes encargados de hacer cumplir la ley más calificados y educados, espero que no más muertes provengas de la desigualdad racial.
