Biden’s introduction to the presidency has been filled with new legislatures and at its foundation, reversing Donald Trump’s most controversial policies. I want to discuss some of those new orders that Biden has passed. Biden’s team has released 30 executive actions in the first three days in office. The majority of them have been designed to combat the coronavirus. First, as one of Biden’s main points prior to his inauguration, he is trying to distribute the vaccine at a quicker rate. On January 22 he signed an executive order in the hopes that it will accelerate manufacturing and delivery of supplies for vaccination, testing, and Personal Protective Equipment. Other coronavirus related executives include expand US coronavirus testing capacity and enhance the production and analysis of coronavirus data.
Two of the most publicized changes have been reversals of Trump’s previous executive orders. First, on January 20 Biden halted the construction of the wall, dividing the United States and Mexico, stating “Like every nation, the United States has a right and a duty to secure its borders and protect its people against threats. But building a massive wall that spans the entire southern border is not a serious policy solution. It is a waste of money that diverts attention from genuine threats to our homeland security.”
Another executive order, aided in empowering the LGBTQ+ community in the United States. Biden enabled all qualified Americans to serve their country in the army. This was a direct contradiction to Donald Trump’s order that transgender people could not serve in the army. Biden argues that the military would greatly benefit from a diverse group of participants.
With the multitude of changes that Biden has already set in place, I am eager and excited to see what the rest of his presidency will entail.
