Durante las elecciones presidenciales, hemos oído hablar mucho de los planes de Biden para la reforma interna. Hemos oído hablar de cómo manejará el COVID, el racismo sistémico y la economía. Sin embargo, lo que no hemos oído es cómo va a mejorar las relaciones dañadas por Trump y fortalecer las relaciones ya existentes. En primer lugar, quiero echar un vistazo a China. Biden afirma que haría un retroceso más eficaz contra China que Trump y trabajaría más estrechamente con sus aliados para presionar a Beijing. Sostuvo que los amplios aranceles de Trump son “erráticos” y “contraproducentes”, y en cambio, pide represalias selectivas contra China utilizando las leyes comerciales existentes y construyendo un frente unido de aliados. Advierte que China está haciendo inversiones masivas en energía, infraestructura y tecnología que amenazan con dejar atrás a Estados Unidos. Además, Biden desea aumentar la presencia de la Fuerza Naval de los Estados Unidos en Asia y el Pacífico para presentar una fuerza unida contra el "autoritarismo de alta tecnología" de China.
Otro país cuya relación ha sido cuestionada bajo la administración Trump es Corea del Norte. Biden declaró que las relaciones de Trump con Kim Jong-un han demostrado ser ineficientes y solo han servido para “legitimar a un dictador”. Además, Biden continuará apoyando las negociaciones, pero dice que depende de Kim Jong-un adoptando medidas concretas para desmantelar su programa nuclear, con el objetivo final de una Corea del Norte totalmente desnuclearizada. En este momento, Corea del Norte no ha hecho ningún esfuerzo por eliminar ninguna forma de armamento nuclear y tampoco somos conscientes de la posición de Kim Jong-un con el Presidente electo Biden.
Finalmente, un tema que ha sido ampliamente difundido y demonizado en los medios de comunicación durante los últimos cuatro años, en el que esperamos ver a Biden participar, es la inmigración. Como en otros asuntos, Biden ha condenado el enfoque de Trump hacia la inmigración. Bajo Trump, la inmigración, particularmente de México, ha sido publicada como la migración de matones y criminales a Estados Unidos. Biden apoya una reforma integral de la inmigración y en el pasado ha respaldado políticas más restrictivas. Hace hincapié en la necesidad de abordar las causas fundamentales de la inmigración en los países de origen, en lugar de simplemente alejar a los refugiados y a las personas que necesitan ayuda.
